Okay, I broke something

Kinja'd!!!

Over torqued the valve cover nut. I remembered not to do that as soon as it went pop.

Kinja'd!!!

Not really a big deal, just need to go to the dealer and get a new bolt. I did this while opening the cover to check the timing belt, which looked fine. I needed to replace the valve cover gasket anyways...

Thank God it is easily extractable. Broke off a bolt on my intake manifold once, I think it ended up costing only like $60 to remove but it was still a bummer.

Yeah, I was worried about it but it turned out to be no big deal.

Oh noes! Valve cover gasket torque specs are usually important. Do it to spec next time.

It was a brain fart. I knew not to overtighten it but I did it anyways. Oh well, turned into a learning experience.

oh indeed it never occurred to me that this was a good way to check the timing belt, getting that timing belt cover off can be a royal pain, whereas the valve cover is usually pretty simple, having had mine off a couple of times to repaint.

You have to do this to look at the timing belt, no? The valve cover has a lip that covers the timing belt cover

timing belt cover is two parts, the lower can be removed for inspection, but is a PITA. at least on the be series, I never did do an inspection when I owned a D

I don't think I can remove the lower without removing the upper?

Even if I could, it would be way more difficult than doing the top. The valve cover doesn't have to come off, it just needs to lift a little bit. I only took it off because I broke the bolt.

Seeing how easy it is to get to the timing belt though, I may replace it at some point just because I can

lower was removable for inspection. but as you say. removing the valve cover was a way easier option

certainly replacing your timing belt gives good peace of mind
